Music Theory Lessons (Grade Syllabus)
It cannot be overstated that a solid theoretical foundation is necessary for any student to have a comprehensive understanding of what is required of any (exam) piece.
In his lessons, Gavin utilizes the theory syllabi as provided by the ABRSM and RIAM . Over time either of these will ensure a good background in sight- reading/recognising note pitch and rhythms, dynamics, Italian performance directions, articulations, etc.
Currently, one or two examination boards do not ask for previous practical or theory exam results when presenting for an exam. Technically, a student can present for their grade 8 practical exam, without having any previous musical experience. As a teacher Gavin always aims to provide a solid back ground in theory and practical aspects of music, regardless of whether a student decides to enter examination or not.
However, several existing students expressed a strong preference to learn new pieces, exclusively by ear, from the outset. Provided that the scale & arpeggio is learnt for the key of each tune, he’s happy to accommodate this approach, where no examinations are to be entered.
Gavin began playing clarinet aged 16, in the Terenure College Wind Band winning the Dublin School bands competition that same year.
He took up alto saxophone at the age of 20, attending Newpark Music Centre. Whilst there, he progressed to the (Berklee-ratified) Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance, graduating in 2008.
Throughout college and since, he has freelanced in Dublin city, holding jazz residencies at Cafe en Seine, Brasserie le Pont and Coppinger Row amongst others. He has also depped in the old Late Late Show house band led by Frank MacNamara. He has played at many major festivals such as the Electric Picnic, Barndance, Knockanstockan and many more. As part of Dublin ensemble The Jimmy Cake, he supported Kraftwerk at ‘A Day In the Life’ Festival at Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.
Gavin is a long-standing member of one of Ireland’s most successful event/corporate bands- Till Death Do us Party – who featured in the RTE Radio documentary ‘Band of Gold’.
Recent clients have included AirBnB and Heineken Ireland, performing at the 3 Arena to over 1500 people.
He has been playing professionally for over 15 years and is a veteran of over 1000 paid gigs. Gavin has been teaching clarinet and saxophones at Lucan School of Music for 8 years, having previously taught at Dun Laoghaire School of Music. Gavin has full Garda Clearance certification through Lucan School Of Music.
